Lateral Wind Loads on Walls in ForteWEB Software (Canada). NBC 2010

Determination of design wind pressure used for wall member design

Referenced sources: NBC of Canada 2010, Division B, Part 4 (Section 4.1.7) and User’s Guide – NBC 2005 Structural Commentaries (Commentary I). The static procedure for structural components and cladding is used in the determination of the design wind pressure for loading normal to exterior wall members only.

Building limitations: Normal Importance Category 2 low-rise buildings of a specific minimum height-to-width ratio and a reference height of less than 20 m. NBC 2010, Commentary I (26).

Required user input. Item 1 is a lookup value based on city (kPa):

  1. Wind velocity pressure, q (kPa)

  2. Terrain type (Open or Rough)

  3. Eave height, heave (m)

  4. Ridge height, hridge (m)

  5. Member span (height), l (m)

  6. Tributary width for wind load (m)

The PAE will utilize two calculated values p(ULS) and p(SLS) (probably in units of psi). All other variables are to be made available to the calling application for member report display in imperial units (however, q is to be displayed in kPa).
