Lateral Connections for Vertical Wall Members (NBCC)

Selection of nails and clip angles to resist lateral wind reactions of wall members

The Lateral Connector Engine determines end connections for studs, wall embedded columns and wind headers that are resisting wind forces normal to the exterior face of the wall. The engine considers the lateral member reaction along with species and geometry of the member and the surrounding framing. Two types of connections are returned that meet the load and physical requirements along with some minimal restrictions to avoid splitting of the wood members: Nails (end nails and toe nails) clip angles.

All connector selections are based on the lower design capacity of the member species or the plate species.

End nails must attain a 8Φ embed. into the end of the member after having been nailed through the plate(s).

One end nail is allowed for every 2.5 in² of area, eg. 2 nails into the end of a 2x4, up to a max. of 8 end nails.

Toe nails are permitted on each side of the member for every 2 full inches of wall thickness, eg. 4 nails in a 2x6 stud or a 2x8 stud (two toe nails on each side of the member).

If the member dimension parallel to the wall line is less than 3”, the clip angles will be staggered on each side of the member and half the number of connectors will be available.
