Wind Loading

The Wind Loading tab is only available when the project name is selected in the Job Tree. The properties here affect every level and every member in the job.

Here you can set structure and region specific settings that will cascade to any member that allow for lateral wind loads (currently wall studs and wall embedded columns). If you find that you are mostly likely to reuse the same settings for every job, simply click the Save as Default button in the upper right corner of the window and Forte will keep these settings for every job moving forward. If you are not designing wind loaded wall studs or wall embedded columns, you can skip this step.

IBC Building Code

For the 2009 IBC Building Code Forte software automatically calculates lateral wind load on wall studs and wall embedded columns using ASCE/SEI 7-05 standards. Simply choose your Occupancy Category and Basic Wind Speed at the job level and Forte will use the settings you set on the Level Properties tab to automatically calculate the designed wind pressure for every wall stud and wall embedded column in the job.

For IBC 2012 and 2015 each Risk Category has a unique set of maps and calculates lateral wind load using ASCE/SEI 7-10 standards.

IBC 2018 and 2021 calculates lateral wind load using ASCE/SEI 7-16.

IBC 2024 calculates lateral wind load using ASCE/SEI 7-22.

You may enter your own lateral wind load by checking "Do not apply Wind Load Settings...", then enter your loads on the Loads tab check box.

NBCC Building Code

For NBCC, Forte software automatically calculates lateral wind load on wall studs, columns, and headers using Division B, Part 4, Clause 4.1.7 standards. You may choose to base the wind pressure on either a Selected Location or use a Custom wind pressure value. If you use location, choose a Province and Location on the tab and Forte will use these settings along with the relative Level tab settings to automatically calculate the designed wind loading for every wall stud and wall embedded column in the job. The box for Wind Pressure below the Location dropdown will update based on your choice of location.

You may enter your own lateral wind loading by checking "Do not apply Wind Load Settings...", then enter your own loads on the Loads tab check box.
